RCSD: Teen charged after “body slamming” deputy
Richland Co., S.C. (WOLO)– Sheriff Leon Lott says deputies responded to the Village at Sandhill around 9pm Saturday after someone called 911 to report a fight involving a large group of teenagers.
When deputies arrived and tried to break up the fight, Sheriff Leon Lott says Deputy Ambria Woolever was picked up and body-slammed causing a concussion as well as injuries to her hip and arm.
Sheriff Lott commended Deputy Woolever for not stopping after her injury and continuing to break-up the fight even helping with the arrest of the 16 year old charged in her assault.
Deputies say the teen is charged with 2nd degree Assault and Battery and Aggravated Breach of Peace.
In a news conference Monday, Sheriff Lott said the fight took place in front of the movie theater at the Village at Sandhill.
Sheriff Lott says the theater has been uncooperative in helping to increase safety at the mall.
Lott says while other businesses have hired extra security or enacted guardianship rules for teens, the theater, which is independent from the Village at Sandhill has not.
ABC Columbia News has reached out to Regal Cinemas for comment but have not yet received a response.
