Navy to name destroyer after Midlands medal of honor winner

Columbia, S.C. (WOLO)–A Navy destroyer will be named after a medal of honor winner and Midlands native.
According to a report in the Navy Times, the destroyer will be named after Gilbert native, Corporal Kyle Carpenter.
In 2010, Carpenter shielded another Marine from a grenade blast by throwing his body in front of the explosive.
Carpenter was severely wounded as a result but managed to survive.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2014 by President Barack Obama.
