SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter Police have charged a man with multiple counts of animal cruelty related charges after several dogs were found malnourished and one dog was found dead behind a vacant home, said police.

The police department said dogs were found chained outside behind a home, when officers responded Saturday, Aug 9, to a Willow Drive home.

The dogs were described as emaciated, and it appeared that only one dog was given food recently and no clean water was available, according to police.

After being contacted by police, the owner, Herbert Linwood Butler, 43, of Willow Drive arrived to the home and was placed in custody.

He is charged with failure to bury and six counts of ill treatment of animals.

Butler was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.

Officers said one of the dogs recovered Saturday has since died.

And an investigation into the case is continuing.
