Anderson County working to create 400-acre park

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Anderson County officials want to turn 400 acres of swampland around the Rocky River into a greenway with trails and a water route for canoes.

Anderson County Council voted Tuesday to work with Anderson University and a private nonprofit group to create bicycle, walking and horseback trails in the eastern part of Anderson.

Dean Woods with the Rocky River Conservancy says great communities have great parks. The 400 acres of swamp and wetlands consist of tracts owned by the county, the university and a private landowner.

Woods says he hopes to obtain state and federal grants.

Organizers say the finished project will resemble Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Anderson University uses part of its 125-acre tract as an outdoor classroom for biology students.
