(WCIV) — Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and with it comes an influx of travel as families settle down for the coming fall season and the continuing school year.
Today GasBuddy, North America’s trusted fuel savings platform for more than 25 years, released their annual labor day gas price forecast.
For 2025 they predict gas will sit at approximately $3.15 per gallon, which is 14 cents lower than in 2024, and the lowest price at the pump since Labor Day since 2020.
“Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and when it comes to gas prices, it’s been the cheapest summer to hit the road since the pandemic, a trend that will likely continue with the potential for the national average to fall below $3 per gallon this fall,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
Though this is anticipated to be the most affordable Labor Day weekend to fill up the tank in the last five years, nearly half of all states have been seeing rising gas prices in the last month due to localized refinery outages.
However GasBuddy predicts that motorists can expect more relief as much of the nation transitions back to cheaper winter gasoline in mid-September. Demand for gas will also drop with the conclusion of the summer as motorists set off on fewer road trips and temperatures begin to cool off.
“We’ve seen a remarkably affordable summer to hit the road with incomes up and gas prices down, but there are some challenges that remain: hurricane season and uncertainty over trade, tariffs and Russia’s war on Ukraine. However, I remain optimistic that as cooler weather invades, gas prices too, will seasonally cool off,” said De Haan.
GasBuddy recommends drivers looking to save money on travel costs over Labor Day weekend shop around for the best gas prices along their route.
