South Carolina students show growth on SC READY assessments
(WCIV) — South Carolina students are making notable academic progress, with the latest SC READY test results showing statewide improvements in both reading and math, particularly in the early grades.
The annual assessment, administered to students in grades 3 through 8, revealed that more children are reading and writing at or above grade level than in previous years. Education leaders are calling the upward trend a “Southern Surge” in academic growth.
Early Literacy on the Rise
Third-grade reading scores reached nearly 62% proficiency, with similar gains in grades four and five:
- 3rd grade: 61.7% at or above grade level
- 4th grade: 63.5%
- 5th grade: 62.5%
State officials attribute the improvement to early literacy interventions, stronger teacher training, and the use of high-quality instructional materials. A major contributor has been the expansion of LETRS training, which equips early-grade teachers with evidence-based strategies for teaching reading.
Math Scores Trending Up
Math performance is also improving. Statewide, 43.9% of students now meet or exceed expectations, up from 40.8% in 2023. Much of the growth is tied to the Palmetto Math Project, a new initiative designed to strengthen math instruction. Districts piloting the program have reported some of the strongest gains.
A Statewide Effort
Education leaders say these results highlight the impact of investing in teachers, high-quality curriculum, and targeted support for students. They also emphasize the importance of maintaining momentum as South Carolina works toward its long-term goal: having at least 75% of students performing on grade level by 2030.
