Man charged with kidnapping, murder after Thursday night incident

NEWBERRY, S.C. (WOLO)– Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman says a 53-year-old man was arrested with a homicide, and kidnapping.

Police say David Ray Clark of Chapin was arrested in connection with a homicide and kidnapping that happened in the City of Newberry on the night of Thursday, September 4.

Clark was taken to the Newberry County Detention Center, and charged with murder, 2 counts of kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes, armed robbery and unlawfully placing a child at risk of harm.

On Friday morning, September 5, the Newberry Police Department received a call about a person being shot in the College Park Apartment complex and a woman and child being forced into a vehicle.

Upon law enforcement arriving to the scene, officers had to force entry into the apartment.

Once inside the apartment, a male victim was found deceased on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound.

With the help of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect and kidnapped victims were located in Chapin, and taken back to Newberry by investigators from the Newberry Police Department and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece identified the victim as 53-year-old, Dexter Tobias Gary, Sr. of Pomaria, S.C., as the victim who was found deceased in the apartment.

The incident is being investigated by the Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Coroner’s Office, SLED, and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
