Coastal Carolina University: One employee fired, one suspended following social media posts on Kirk assassination

UPDATE: Officials at Coastal Carolina University say one employee has been dismissed and another has been suspended without pay pending an investigation.

The university sent a statement regarding its decision:

“Coastal Carolina University has received reports of social media content posted by University employees and individuals not employed by the University. Based on these reports and in accordance with applicable University policy, one employee has been dismissed, effective immediately, and another has been suspended without pay, pending further review. No additional details are available at this time, as these are personnel matters.

CCU is committed to upholding our institutional values as we continue to pursue our core mission of supporting student success with the highest standards of integrity and accountability.”

Since the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk last Wednesday, universities have been firing and suspending employees for comments on social media about his death.

Now, South Carolina lawmakers are calling on Coastal Carolina University to take action after a couple of their employees have allegedly shared negative posts regarding Kirk’s death.

South Carolina Rep. Adam Morgan re-posted on X a post allegedly from a CCU public safety employee saying “with how much she loves throwing slurs around on the congress floor she might not be too far behind” with a fingers-crossed emoji.

Representative Nancy Mace re-shared that post, saying, “an alleged public safety employee at a South Carolina college suggests I will be assassinated next” and tagged CCU.

Congressman Russell Fry posted on X, “totally unacceptable behavior! Terminate this person,” and tagged CCU.

Nancy Mace also reposted a X post from another CCU employee that allegedly shared a post that said Kirk “repeated bigoted ideas.”

In response, the university said it’s reviewing its own employees’ social media.

They sent the following statement to ABC15:

“Coastal Carolina University has received reports regarding posts on personal social media accounts and comments related to current events. We are investigating the reports, and we will address any personnel matters in accordance with university policies. Personal beliefs and opinions shared on individual social media accounts are not a reflection of, nor do they represent, the views of the university.”

On Tuesday, Clemson University announced that they dismissed two faculty members after comments were made on social media regarding the death of Charlie Kirk.

Clemson previously announced that they had fired one employee and removed two from their teaching duties following an investigation and a special board meeting at 2 p.m. on Monday.
