Richland County jail guard charged with assault

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former Richland County jail guard is charged with assault after authorities say he threw a mixture of bleach and water on two inmates.

Deputies said 25-year-old Phillip Young was arrested Friday after a three-week investigation.

Authorities say Young was captured on video throwing the bleach and water at the inmates after an argument at the jail on Jan. 31. Both prisoners were taken to the hospital and treated.

Other jail employees reported the incident immediately. Young was fired before his arrest. He worked as a guard for three years.

Young remains in jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
