SC AG files amicus brief regulating panhandling
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Under current U.S. law, begging, and panhandling are protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson is arguing that should be left up to the states.
Wednesday, Dec. 17, Wilson’s office announced he is leading a 20 state front of the court brief urging the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to allow states to regulate homelessness and public begging.
Wilson says the lower court decision could affect the ability of states nationwide to enforce similar laws.
