MEAC Recognizes Outgoing SC State A.D.

NORFOLK, VA (SCSU SID) — South Carolina State athletics director Charlene M. Johnson was recognized Saturday (Mar. 15) by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for over twenty (20) -years of service to the Delegate Assembly during the recent MEAC basketball tournament at The Scope. Johnson, who is in her 31st year as a member of the SC State athletics department, will be stepping down as Bulldog AD April 15 after almost eleven (11) years in the position. She will remain at the University in an athletic fund-raising position. The Allendale, SC native was presented an appreciation award by the MEAC during halftime of the MEAC tournament women‘s championship game between eventual winner Hampton and Coppin State. MEAC Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas called Johnson a pioneer in athletics administration and an outstanding contributor to the MEAC during her tenure as AD at SC State. Her resume‘ includes a number of firsts, including the only female AD at SC State, her alma mater; the only woman to serve as Chairperson of the Directors of Athletics in the MEAC; and the first full-time female coach at SC State. Currently, she is the only female athletics director in the Palmetto State. “I‘m humbled to be recognized by the MEAC,” said Johnson. “It‘s gratifying and very meaningful to be honored by your peers. “I have enjoyed working with the conference over the years, watching it grow and evolve into one of the nation‘s premier conferences. I‘d like to thank Dr. Thomas and the entire conference for their support over the years, and especially for this prestigious recognition.”
