COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — New numbers out show more children are affected by Autism, making Autism Awareness even more important. According to a new Centers for Disease Control report, 1 in 68 children in the United States has an Autism Spectrum Disorder. That’s a 33% increase from 1 in 88 just two years ago. Since 2007, April 2nd has been designated “Autism Awareness Day.” On this day area children and adults set out to light Columbia blue from signs, goodies, art work even lighting up the South Carolina Governor’s mansion. In the midst of it all a special moment as the one balloon of sixty-eight, the one that represented children with Autism, got stuck in a tree during the balloon release. Those watching say what happened next was symbolic as that balloon found its place with the others.
