Consumer sentiment hits all time low

(CNN)– Not even during past wars, the 911 aftermath, the Great Recession, and the COVID pandemic have Americans felt this negative about the U.S. economy.

Consumer sentiment fell to a new all-time low in May.

The latest survey from the University of Michigan finds its index down five points from April.

The new mark of 44.2 represents a drop for a third-straight month.

Inflation and affordability had already been a foundation for the sour sentiment, now with price shocks from rising oil prices adding to it.
