One eastbound lane open after vehicle fire on I-26
COLUMBIA, S.C.(WOLO)– Irmo Fire and Highway Patrol says one lane is open after a vehicle caught on fire on the freeway.
The vehicle fire happened on I-26 eastbound at the 105 mile marker.
Irmo fire says just after 1:30 p.m. a big rig with the cab section was fully involved with fire spreading to the trailer.
The driver safely escaped the truck before the fire got into the cab, and the trailer was empty.
Fire officials say, the diesel tanks were nearly full and one of them failed during the fire, feeding the fire and creating a dangerous situation for passing motorists and firefighters.
Out of an abundance of caution the freeway and nearby Jamil Road is closed until firefighters get the fire under control.
Officials say to expect the right lane to be closed for several more hours as there is quite a mess to clean up.
