Spurrier: SEC Post-Spring Teleconference

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier spoke Wednesday on the SEC’s post-spring teleconference. Notes from Spurrier: — “We had a good spring. No real serious injuries. Dylan Thompson is going to be our quarterback obviously.” — Said 5th-year senior QB Dylan Thompson is, “Going to try and pack everything into one season,” as the team‘s starter. — On whether or not quarterback play will dip with all the new starters, “Nobody knew who Johnny Manziel was until a couple years ago, when he stepped on the field.” — He thinks the Gamecocks will have a preseason rank of, “9 or 10, which we’ve done the last few years, maybe a little better.” — Said running back Shon Carson had shoulder surgery and should be back by the fall. — Said tight end Busta Anderson should be back in about a month from his triceps injury. — On SEC scheduling, which left South Carolina with Texas A&M as a permanent conference opponent, “We’re not a victim. It didn’t to us either way.” But he did think 6-0-2 was the fairest option. “I sort of understand Joe Alleva at LSU. They’re getting a bad deal out of this.” — On Nick Saban’s advocacy for a nine-game conference schedule: “If I was Alabama and did not have an in-state rival in another conference, I’d probably go for nine too.” — Said he thinks former Gamecock defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will be the No. 1 pick, “But only time will tell.” — Said to give Clemson a little bragging rights, “Those guys have done very well up there.” Adding that, “Gamecock fans would rather win the Clemson game than any conference game.”
