RCSD: Student arrested with gun on school grounds

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a 16-year-old was arrested for having a firearm on school grounds.

On Tuesday, August 18, around 9 a.m., the School Resource Officer at Richland Northeast High School was notified by a private security officer that a student had walked through a metal detector with a firearm inside his backpack.

The firearm contained a fully loaded magazine of 17 rounds, and there was no round in the chamber, says RCSD.

The student was taken into custody and will be taken to SCDJJ.

The 16-year-old is charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a weapon under the age of 18.
