Former Orangeburg public safety officer arrested after assault caught on video

A former officer with the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety was arrested Tuesday after he reportedly assaulted a victim as they were being detained at the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

Christopher James Tyler, a 35-year-old, was arrested and charged with assault and battery in the second degree, say officials.

The arrest warrant states that the incident occurred on July 25 after Tyler had arrested the victim and was transporting them to the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

While inside the detention center the victim, while handcuffed, reportedly spat in Tyler’s face.

Tyler then punched the victim in the face and slammed them into a brick wall twice, causing the victim to hit their head both times, the report states.

The incident was captured on camera footage from multiple angles and Tyler also admitted to his role in the assault.

Tyler was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center, and the case will be prosecuted by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
