2 children detained after threats made against middle school

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter County deputies say two children were detained Tuesday for allegedly making threats of violence against Chestnut Oaks Middle School.

Around 1:42 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a threat against the school.

Officials placed the school on lockdown while deputies responded.

Investigators detained two juveniles believed to be the source of the threat, says the sheriff’s office.

They were taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis says, “The safety of our children remains one of our highest priorities. We take every threat against our schools seriously. Parents, please talk with your children about the seriousness of making or sharing threats. Students, if you see or hear something concerning, say something – do not share it or spread it. Report it immediately to your school officials or school resource officer.”

The incident remains under investigation.
