SC inmate scheduled for execution dies Monday morning

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A South Carolina inmate scheduled for execution has died.

According to the SC Department of Corrections, Louis Winkler died Monday morning, September 7 at Kirkland Correctional Institution following an extended illness.

Officials say Winkler was sentenced to death following the shooting death of his estranged wife in Loris in 2006.

He was convicted in 2008.
