Arrest made in connection with double homicide

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Sheriff Anthony Dennis says an arrest has been made in connection with a double homicide that was discovered during the beginning of the month.

On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the bodies of Lola Hurt and Melany Johnson were discovered on Puddin Swamp Road.

On Thursday, September 17, Howard “Doug” Coker, Jr. was arrested and charged with 2 counts of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and burglary 1st degree.

Deputies say Coker and one of the victim’s Melany Johnson were parties in an ongoing domestic dispute.

Even with the arrest of Coker, the investigation will continue and Sheriff Dennis asks anyone with any information to reach out to Sumter Co. Sheriff’s Office.

“This was a heinous act of violence against two innocent parties. The sheriff’s office will continue to seek justice for these victims in this tragic case,” says the sheriff.
