Trump’s green card public charge rule takes effect

(CNN)– A rule took effect Friday, September 18, that could make it harder for some immigrants to get green cards.

It affects what officials consider when deciding if someone could end up needing public assistance.

It tells them to take into account non-cash benefits like Food Stamps and Medicaid.

That’s opposed to just cash programs like Supplemental Security Income from Social Security.

The Department of Homeland Security says the change ensures immigrants can support themselves.

Opponents argue it could stop their children from getting needed care even if they’re U.S. citizens.
