State Rep. Michael Rivers arrested, charged with pointing a firearm after June incident
(WCIV) — South Carolina State Representative Michael Rivers has been arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm following the conclusion of an investigation stemming from a June 9 incident, according to a new release from SLED.
According to previous coverage on the incident, Rivers was suspected of being involved in an altercation at a polling site located at the Green Pond Community Center in Colleton County.
SLED has now confirmed that Rivers reportedly became involved in a brief verbal altercation with an individual at the polling site, over the campaign for the SC House of Representatives District 121 seat.
The altercation reportedly led Rivers to obtain a firearm from his vehicle and point it at the victim. Multiple witness statements and video evidence corroborated this account.
Police who reported to the scene after the incident state that Rivers was nowhere to be found upon their arrival, and that he had reportedly left in a vehicle shortly before police arrived.
Rivers, during the statewide primary elections on Tuesday June 9, lost to Shannon N. DeLoach. It remains unclear if the altercation had anything to do with the election. Rivers was booked into the Colleton County Detention Center on Oct. 9.
