Suspect arrested in Richland County woman’s death

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Richland County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a suspect in a shooting that killed one woman and injured a man.

Fifty-three-year-old John Corbett turned himself in to Richland County sheriff’s deputies Thursday morning.

Sheriff Leon Lott said Corbett is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend and wounding his roommate Wednesday night at a home just south of Columbia.

Coroner Gary Watts said 28-year-old Akawandalis A. Byrd of Columbia was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. An autopsy indicated she died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The man was also taken to the hospital in serious condition. His name has not been released.

It was not clear if Corbett has an attorney.
