Denmark Tech supporters sue state; its future is uncertain
DENMARK, S.C. (AP) – Supporters of Denmark Technical College are suing South Carolina even as the school’s fate is being debated in the state budget.
The lawsuit says the historically black technical college gets less support from the state and surrounding counties than other technical colleges in South Carolina.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports supporters are trying to stop a plan in the House version of the state budget that would close Denmark Tech and reopen it as a trade school.
The Senate version of the budget would not close the technical college.
A conference committee of three House members and three senators will try to find a compromise to the budget plans in the next few weeks.
