Teen charged in killing 11-year-old after 35 shots fired into home

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Police say a 17-year-old has been charged as an adult with murder in a shooting in South Carolina where more than 35 shots were fired into a home.

Anderson Police Chief Jim Stewart said Wednesday that Stephen Braden Powell is also charged with four counts of attempted murder in the June 23 shooting.

Authorities say 11-year-old Ja’Naiya Scott was killed and two other girls hurt.

Stewart says two guns — a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle were used so investigators are looking for at least one more shooter.

The chief said at a news conference police are aware of a social media post under Powell’s account confessing and offering prayers to the family, but wouldn’t give details.

Stewart says Powell asked for a lawyer, but didn’t give the attorney’s name.
