Furman receives $5M pledge for student life center

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A Furman University graduate has pledged $5 million to the college, mostly for the renovation and expansion of its student life center.

University officials announced Tuesday the donation represents the largest single commitment by an individual in the school’s history. The donor wants to remain anonymous.

The pledge was made as part of Furman’s $400 million fundraising campaign, which stands at $337 million. The campaign was launched in 2007 and will end in 2013.

Officials say the re-design of the University Center will include expanded spaces for student groups, an expanded food court, and the addition of a night club for student entertainment. New features include a two-story glass atrium enclosing the current courtyard.

Furman did not specify how much of the donor’s money will go toward that project.
