Weathers Re-Elected As South Carolina’s Top Farmer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Republican Hugh Weathers has defeated two challengers to win another term as South Carolina’s agriculture commissioner.
The Republican won Tuesday’s general election with about 83 percent of the vote in early returns. He faced no Democratic opposition but did have two third-party challengers.
United Citizens Party candidate David Edmond got 10 percent of the vote, and American Party candidate Emile DeFelice got more than 7 percent.
Weathers is a dairy farmer from Orangeburg County. He was first appointed to the post in 2004 to fill out the term of a commissioner indicted for taking money to protect a cockfighting ring. He was elected to four-year terms in 2006 and in 2010.
