Celebrating our Veterans
(WOLO)COLUMBIA,S.C.,— ” There’s not enough you can do to honor them, i mean they gave their lives.” Those who have lived to talk about it say everyday is a memorial they’re proud to have been a part of. ” There’s not a day that goes by where i don’t think about vietnam, that i don;t think about my friends. veterans day is a sacred day for us.” The marching bands – the proudest of salutes or the wave of the American flag all helped usher in the annual veterans day parade throughout the streets of downtown Columbia. Others watching ceremonies like this one where a bronze sculpture was dedicated representing members of the Navy from South Carolina who served in World War II. ” I feel much more patriotic than i have ever felt before after the parade and now this. I see what it means to be an American.” Whether your seat was curbside or caught by peering out of a downtown parking deck…it’s a feeling of pride so many want to share. but some Vietnam Veterans like Bob Decker say that’s a hard thing to do. ” we say we are a band of brothers and we are. we have something that no one else can share. we want to share it with people but we can’t it’s just something you have to live.” “you’ll hear about war but until you’ve experienced it…it’s totally different.” While many used the occasion as a teaching moment to pass the importance of the sacrifices made down to future generations – others took pause to do one thing – remember.
