COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — At a one-year anniversary celebration for City of Columbia Police Chief, Randy Scott, dozens gathered to applaud his accomplishments and hear his plan for the city’s future. The celebration doubled as an employee appreciation gathering. Chief Scott says the strides made by the Department are because of him employees. Since taking over as interim chief October 5, 2010, Scott has received more than $700,000 in new funds from city leaders. That money has been used to hire new staff, upgrade technology and implement intelligence-led policing. There has been a 2% decrease in violent crime over the past twelve months, according to Scott. The native South Carolinian and former Marine had been second-in-command with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years prior to leading the City’s embattled police department. Scott says the past year is an indication of more good things to come.
