Man sentenced to 6 years for fatal crash

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — An Orangeburg man has been sentenced to six years in prison for a 2013 car crash that killed a Claflin University student.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/1rafn4j ) that Robert Jennings V pleaded guilty to two counts of felony driving under the influence.

Judge Diane Goodstein suspended Jennings’ sentence to six years in prison and five years of probation. He also must pay more than $21,000 and perform community service.

The Nov. 2, 2013, crash killed Anise Portis, a 19-year-old biochemistry major at Claflin University. Two other women in the car with Portis were injured.

Investigators say Jennings attempted to pass Portis in a no-passing zone. Portis was turning into a driveway when Jennings’ truck slammed into her Honda.
