Tow trucks circle Beaufort to honor dead driver
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — More than 25 tow trucks did a slow lap around the city of Beaufort to honor a tow truck driver and her friend killed in a wreck on Interstate 95.
The Beaufort Gazette (http://bit.ly/pzcdmF) reports the procession was held Thursday, the same day as a wake for 55-year-old driver Denise Peeples Smith and her 52-year-old friend Phyllis Amsler Cook. The two were killed last weekend when they were assisting a motorist and a pickup truck careened into the vehicle they were helping.
Memorial organizers said they wanted to bring attention to a state law that drivers move over when there is an emergency vehicle on the side of a road. The law requires drivers to either move over or slow to a safe speed if they can’t change lanes.
