COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Wednesday, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin joined officials from Hardball Capital and other city leaders to announce the name of Columbia’s Minor League Baseball stadium. The venue, to serve as a multi-purpose venue, will be named Spirit Communications Park. It’s named after Columbia-based Spirit Communications. The stadium will be built on the grounds that once housed the state mental hospital. Bob Hughes is the developer. We still don’t know the name of the team that will play at Spirit Communications Park. Officials are sifting through the more than two-thousand entrees submitted through the “Name Our Team” contest. The team’s identify and brand are expected to be announced in the spring.
