SC Man’s Death Sentence Overturned in Deaths

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ A judge in Greenville has sentenced a man to life in prison for murder and rape after the defendant’s earlier death sentence was overturned. Area media outlets report that Circuit Judge Roger Couch sentenced 46-year-old Fredrick Antonio Evins to three life sentences and 120 additional years in prison Thursday. Evins had admitted to raping and killing two women and raping a third in separate incidents. Evins had been on death row when a judge overturned his conviction in one of the cases earlier this year. His attorneys argued last June that the death sentence was inappropriate because Evins was mentally disabled and has a low IQ. Evins was resentenced after pleading guilty to various charges in the cases.
