Newberry County standoff ends peacefully

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say a four-hour standoff in Newberry County has ended peacefully with an arrest and the rescue of a 4-year-old girl.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said his deputies were trying to arrest 44-year-old Shannon Smith Friday afternoon for a failure to appear warrant in Colorado when he saw the officers through a window and ran through his home.

Foster says a deputy also heard lighter footsteps, and officers decided to back up and negotiate with Smith.

The sheriff says after deputies failed to hear sounds from inside the home for three hours, they rushed inside. Investigators say Smith was locked in a shower with his daughter. He was arrested without incident.

Foster says Smith will face several charges in South Carolina. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
