Man dies in wreck as car flees from Dorchester County deputy

JEDBURG, S.C. (AP) — A Moncks Corner man has been arrested after a passenger in his car died as the driver drover away from a Dorchester County sheriff’s deputy.

Authorities told local media outlets that 23-year-old Archie Lee Reid Jr. has been charged with failure to stop for police in an attempted traffic stop Sunday night. It was not clear if Reid has an attorney.

Thirty-five-year-old Derrick Lawrence died in the wreck.,

Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Phinney said deputies were alerted about a possible drunken driver. Phinney said a deputy noticed the car near Summerville and began to chase it.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the car ran off the road, overcorrected and hit a pole on the other side and overturned.

Investigators said both men were thrown from the vehicle.
