Ex-Richland deputy pleads guilty in 2013 assault

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former Richland County deputy has pleaded guilty to assault for handcuffing a woman at a Columbia restaurant.

Local outlets report that Paul Derrick pleaded guilty Wednesday to third-degree assault and battery and was sentenced to time served.

Derrick was fired in October 2013 after his arrest. Off duty at the time, Derrick got into an argument with another patron, then a woman. Derrick left the bar and returned with his badge, handcuffs and gun.

A cellphone video captured him in civilian clothes putting the woman in handcuffs and berating her. The woman was in the Army, and Derrick was in the Marines. The video shows him insulting her about that.

Derrick was retired from the Columbia Fire Department and had been a deputy for 14 years.
