Newberry Offense Shines In Spring Game

NEWBERRY (NC SID) — A great crowd of 1,500 on a perfect day witnessed the offense take a 54-32 win over the defense in Newberry College’s annual Spring Game at historic Setzler Field on Saturday. The modified scoring setup used in the past had some additions this season, as the offense was rewarded for chunk plays, with that unit picking up two points for each rush of over 15 yards and each pass completion over 20 yards. Braxton Ivery scored the first touchdown of the day on a 10-yard quarterback keeper in the first quarter. The offense’s second trip to the endzone came on an 18-yard touchdown completion from Sumner Cooler to Alexx Cooke. After 25 straight points put up by the offense, the defense responded with 12 consecutive points on a Nate Sichali interception, two tackles for loss and three straight three-and-out series. Kinard Lisbon also picked off a pass broken up by Isaac Ferguson. Cole Watson scored on a 15-yard touchdown reception from Raleigh Yeldell and Kevin Miller scored on a 2-yard touchdown carry which he had set up with a 32-yard carry. Jaquille Oden picked up consecutive points on a sack and a tackle for loss. Big plays late in the fourth quarter punctuated a great day, as Darius Clark sprinted for an 83-yard touchdown reception from Cooler and the penultimate drive of the day was snuffed out on an interception by Craig Steedley.
