Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Monday, Governor Nikki Haley and USC Basketball Coach Dawn Staley announced they will team up to hold a teacher supply drive in July. The Governor said on average, school supplies can cost a teacher between $500 and $1,000 out of their own pocket. To help going into the next school year, Governor Haley hopes to change that for hundreds of teachers in 8 rural counties throughout the state. “We want to help teachers, we want to help students, we want everybody to get a good start to the school year,” said Governor Nikki Haley. The drive will not just be beneficial to teachers but it will also be a driving force inside the classroom. The difference maker the Governor said, will be South Carolinians. “What I hope this does is inspire a lot of people in South Carolina to realize we go through out day to day lives but there’s a lot of people who struggle and if we can lift up anybody that’s struggling, it makes it worth it,” said Governor Haley. Through the campaign, they are also hoping to lift up and motivate students. Innersole will be collecting new sneakers for second graders. “For us to go pick up a pair of shoes for a child, or for us to go get some teacher supplies for a teacher who works with a lot of kids everyday, it’s a good thing for South Carolina,” said Governor Haley. While kids are enjoying their summer break, two big names in our state are setting out a lesson plan for the next school year. “We look forward to impacting lives of our young people every single day, at a crucial age of their life,” said Coach Dawn Staley. There are several ways to get involved if you want to donate. You can drop off school supplies or a new pair of sneakers to a drop-off bin at your local DMV starting next month or you can order supplies online at www.theoriginalsixfoundation.org/teachersupplydrive .
