Wofford: Funeral set for Sunday for basketball player Tate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Wofford says the funeral for basketball player Jeremiah Tate is scheduled for Sunday.

In a news release, the school says the service will take place at Bible Way Church in Columbia, South Carolina, which the German-born Tate listed as his hometown.

The 19-year-old drowned at Lake Wylie near the North Carolina-South Carolina border early Monday. He was working in the area as a camp counselor.

A York County, South Carolina, sheriff’s report states Tate and another counselor jumped from a bridge to swim, but the counselor told authorities Tate “had trouble swimming and kept sinking” when he tried to help. Authorities later found Tate’s body below the bridge.

Tate was a rising junior who played in 13 games.

The school says condolences can be sent to Tate’s family in Columbia.
