Irmo S.C. (WOLO)– “I guess it was the blue lights flashing in the living room that really got my attention,” says neighbor Jack Armstrong. According to Armstrong he just happened to be awake at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning when he noticed the commotion taking place outside his next door neighbor’s home. Armstrong says, “There were a number of cars, firetrucks, police officers, gathered in the front yard. There was someone in the yard that was in deep sorrow.” Authorities tell ABC Columbia news they were called to the Wychwood Rd. residence around 1 a.m. due to a domestic disturbance between 21-year-old Bobby Wilson and his 57 year old Grandfather Michael Jones. Irmo Police Chief Joe Nates says, “When we got there, family members were waiting outside, the grandfather was inside he didn’t comply with the officers. He presented and pointed a firearm, the officers immediately asked him to drop the firearm he refused to do so and he was shot.” One nearby neighbor says he heard three gunshots and then ran outside to capture footage of the scene. According to SLED Representative Thom Berry, Jones was shot in the upper torso and taken to Richland Memorial where police say he’s now recovering from surgery. Authorities add that the investigation is ongoing and it’s unclear what charges Jones will face. Nates says, “Charges are pending. There was a domestic incident that happened Monday night that was reported to us after the shooting, it was a criminal domestic violence issue between husband and wife… those charges are pending as well.’ As for Armstrong he says the incident doesn’t alarm him, it just serves as a reminder, “You just have to be very very cognizant of what is going on around you. I don’t feel any less safe, no, but by the same token I pay attention to what’s happening and I think all of us need to.”
