Kershaw County Sheriff’s Warn of Check Scam

(WOLO) LUGOFF, S.C. Sheriff Jim Matthews with the Kershaw County sheriff’s department says this is onr of the most legitimate scams he has seen in some time. Authorities were first alerted to the scam when an area resident showed them a congratulations letter and check for nearly 4 thousand dollars. The letter gives instructions to deposit a very authentic looking check for three thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars into their account and then western union them nearly two thousand dollars for taxes. Whiel police say the check is legitimate the victims never get their money. After they get the scam artists get their money from western union, they put a stop payment on the check. Out of two grand, police say they have no way of helping the victims get it back since the scammers are overseas. So far, no one has reported falling victim to the scam but Sheriff’s Matthews says he believes there may be some people out there who are too embarrassed to come forward.
