SC State Museum displaying art by blind students

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Clay face jugs made by blind students are on display at the South Carolina State Museum.

The museum announced that the pottery exhibit will be featured in its education corridor through Dec. 11. It includes 16 works made by students who attended the state Commission for the Blind’s 2011 summer program for teenagers.

Art curator Paul Matheny says face jugs are a traditional South Carolina art form introduced by African slaves.

He says the exhibit allows the public to not only recognize face jugs as a traditional folk art, but raise awareness of the creative abilities of the visually impaired.

The jugs have been on display since Oct. 22.
