Massive raise proposed for Charleston school board

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Two Charleston County School Board members say the board should get a raise – a 2,400 percent increase to be exact.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/uDpL2j ) the county board will consider the proposal Monday.

The board members are now paid $25 a meeting – about $600 a year. The proposal would increase the salary to $15,000 a year. That would be the highest in the state.

Board member Elizabeth Moffley says the $25 a meeting is a joke and she just wants to be equitably compensated.

Board members serve without pay in 31 school districts in South Carolina.

Horry County has the highest-paid school board members. They get $9,600 a year. The chairman makes $13,400.
