SC man shot in parking lot standoff with police

BEREA, S.C. (AP) — A standoff with police in Berea has ended with a man being shot and wounded after reportedly firing a gun at deputies.

Police say the incident began with an afternoon chase of the suspect by Anderson County deputies and the state Highway Patrol, who were responding to a call about a break-in at a home.

The pursuit ended in Greenville County, when the man pulled into the parking lot at the Berea Department of Motor Vehicles and refused to get out of his car.

Deputies say they fired a non-lethal device at the suspect, who fired back with a gun. That’s when deputies returned fire, wounding him. The man was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Officials have not yet released his name or his condition. No one else was hurt.
