Charleston man convicted of beating woman to death

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A man has been convicted of beating a woman to death in North Charleston last year.

Forty-eight-year-old Gregory Gathers was convicted by a Charleston County jury Thursday.

Police say 53-year-old Renee Nevarez was beaten and cut during an argument with Gathers in her home in June 2010.

Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson sentenced Gathers to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Gathers and Nevarez had argued about the possible theft of $400 before she was attacked.
