North Myrtle Beach Police Sgt. dies after car crash while responding to a call

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The City of North Myrtle Beach says a police sergeant died early Friday morning while driving to a call in Barefoot Resort. Officials say North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Sergeant Gordon William Best was driving southbound on Highway 17 around 4 a.m., on wet roads, when he lost control of his vehicle which veered into the northbound lane and collided with a utility pole. Authorities say Sergeant Best was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Officials say Sergeant Best joined the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department in October 2013 and was promoted to sergeant in February 2019. Sergeant Best was 30 years old.
