Fake Toys for Tots representative arrested in SC
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Police in Rock Hill have arrested a man wearing a Santa hat who said he was a representative of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.
Forty-three-year-old John Anthony Hunter of Lancaster was charged with petty larceny. Police say he took a shopping cart from a grocery store in Rock Hill.
Officers were called to the store around noon Monday and saw Anthony soliciting customers outside the store. The Toys for Tots program collects toys to be donated to children.
Police say Hunter left the area without collecting any money or toys.
The shopping cart was returned.
It was not clear if Hunter has a lawyer.
