Furman receives $1M gift from Milliken Foundation

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — The Milliken Foundation is donating $1 million to Furman University to support the school’s science center.

The university announced Thursday that the gift was made in honor of Furman trustee Daniel Sanders, who recently retired from Milliken & Co. after eight years on its board of directors.

The library inside the Charles H. Townes Center for Science will be named for Sanders’ family.

Sanders is the former president of ExxonMobil Chemical Co., and former chairman of the American Chemical Council and the Society of Chemical Industry. His wife, Emilyn, is a trustee emeritus at Furman. They live in Greenville. Their sons are Furman graduates.

The private university hopes to raise $400 million by the end of 2013 in its Because Furman Matters campaign. It has raised $342 million so far.
