Charleston County thinks again about I-526 plan

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Charleston County Council is again thinking about finishing an expressway around Charleston.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/s6BI72) council agreed Tuesday to hold a public meeting in February on options for completing Interstate 526 through Charleston’s western suburbs.

The state Transportation Department has proposed a low-speed parkway to finish the interstate but because of public opposition the council rejected that idea earlier this year. The state Infrastructure Bank then told the county to return $11 million spent planning the road.

Many who want the road completed showed up at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Mary Graham of the local chamber of commerce said those in favor of completing the road don’t want a low-speed parkway. She says they want it completed as an interstate.
