Charleston man gets 5 years for killing father
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing his father in North Charleston two years ago.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/vWWTuS ) 49-year-old Dale Kelly was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for his father’s shooting death in 2009.
Kelly had pleaded guilty earlier this year to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 82-year-old Creighton Kelly.
Circuit Judge Thomas Hughston ordered Kelly to serve five years of probation after he is released from prison.
Prosecutors say Dale Kelly fired three rounds from a 20-gauge shotgun through the bedroom door of his father’s home.
Defense attorney Frank Cornely said Kelly shot at the door when it became stuck and did not know his father was on the other side.
